Why is the UPS Widget not available in my country?
Widget first came to help UPS customers in UK, France and Germany in 2007 and then expanded to help those in Poland, Italy and Czech in 2008. The UPS Widget is country specific because he has embedded links into country pages on ups.com to help customers access more services from UPS. The actual tracking application and RSS aspects will work in any country. We expanded UPS Widget to 20 countries in 2009. If you'd like to seem him in your country let us hear your feedback at Widget@ups.com.
Unfortunately not... Yet. But there are plans to make it happen.
I've downloaded UPS Widget but it's not running. What's going wrong?
You've downloaded the UPS Widget Installer, which still needs to be run before UPS Widget can get going. Make sure you can find the installer - download it to "Desktop" or "My Documents", then double-click on it and follow the on-screen instructions to install UPS Widget. Also, UPS Widget needs ADOBE® AIR™ to run UPS Widget. If you receive this error: 'User has to install ADOBE® AIR™ separately for UPS Widget install to work,' please go to http://get.adobe.com/air/ and install ADOBE® AIR™ separately. UPS Widget works optimally in ADOBE® AIR™ v 1.5.2.8870 or higher.
I can't find the UPS Widget icon in the system tray anymore. Where has it gone?
Possible answers:
- Windows® XP has hidden it. To retrieve it, simply click the "<<" button in the system tray
- "explorer.exe" has crashed and not correctly restored the icon. UPS Widget IS STILL RUNNING. To retrieve the icon, you will need to stop the application and restart it. Windows® 2000/Windows® XP users should follow these steps:
- Hold down "CTRL + ALT + DEL"
- In the resulting window, click the "Task Manager" button (in Windows® XP Home Edition, you will automatically be taken to the Task Manager)
- The Windows® Task Manager will appear. Click the "Processes" tab
- Click the column title named "Image Name" to place the processes in alphabetical order
- Find the process related to your UPS Widget. This is commonly called upswidget.exe
- Once you've found it, simply highlight it and click 'End Process'. A warning will appear and you should click 'Yes'
- Now that UPS Widget has been stopped, you can re-launch it from the Windows® Start Menu
- Mac® users should find the "UPS Widget 2" folder in their applications folder. Click on UPS Widget to start the application, then right-click or ctrl-click on the icon to select "Open at Login"
My personal firewall flagged the fact that UPS Widget is trying to connect to the Internet. Why?
UPS Widget needs to contact the Internet to check for any messages or alerts it needs to display. If there are any, and they contain multimedia content, UPS Widget will also download that content in the background. The application will also send back anonymous statistics (such as the number of clicks on a particular link) to our server. These are UPS Widget's only reasons for accessing the Internet, so you should let it through your firewall.
Service Pack 2 introduces Microsoft's® new Security Center, which includes a personal firewall (Windows® Firewall), stopping malicious applications from accessing the Internet. Sometimes Windows® Firewall will also stop your UPS Widget from accessing the Internet to retrieve messages. To restore the message function follow these steps:
- From the Windows® Start Menu, choose "Control Panel" (or "Settings > Control Panel if using the "Classic Start Menu")
- Click the icon named "Security Center"
- In the resulting window, click the "Windows® Firewall" link
- The Windows® Firewall settings panel will appear. From here choose the "Exceptions" tab
- Click the "Add Program..."
- In the following list find the UPS Widget application you are running, highlight it and click "OK"
- Click OK again, close the Security Center, and close the Control Panel
There's an easy way to stop your computer from trying to establish a connection automatically:
- From the Windows® Start Menu, choose "Control Panel" (or "Settings > Control Panel if using the "Classic Start Menu")
- Select "Network and Internet Connections > Internet Options" (or "Internet Properties" if using a Windows® version earlier than Windows® XP)
- Click the Connections tab, then click the circle beside "Never dial a connection"
- Click OK to save and close the window
Once you've done this, simply click on your dial up connection when you want to go online.
On a Mac®, make sure that your "Network Settings" in the "System Preferences" are set correctly for accessing the internet through a proxy or directly through a internet connection.
Note: This is recommended to prevent other software applications from automatically dialling up for malicious purposes.
What port does UPS Widget use to access the Internet?
Use port 80 for non-secure access or port 443 for secure access.
No, UPS Widget doesn't contain any type of malware. The only data uploaded by UPS Widget are anonymous statistics. Please see our Privacy Policy for details.
Is UPS Widget using a lot of system resources?
No. The application uses very little system memory (usually between 5 and 10 megabytes), its CPU usage is very low, and the hard disk space used will rarely exceed 20 megabytes.
Why does my UPS Widget character/icon hide after a few minutes even if I don't touch it?
UPS Widget is programmed to help, not to get in your way, so when idle it makes itself scarce. It can always be recalled by choosing Show/Hide from the right-click menu.
I want to uninstall UPS Widget. How do I do that?
There are two ways to uninstall UPS Widget on a Windows® machine:
- Use Windows® Add/Remove Programs, located in the Control Panel (please consult Windows® help for information on how to do this)
- When installed, UPS Widget creates an uninstall icon in its program group in the Start Menu. Clicking this will start the un-installation process
On a Mac®, you should navigate to your Applications folder, select the UPS Widget 2 folder and delete.
And it's bye-bye UPS Widget.
UPS Widget Desktop Application Functionality
What are tracking alerts and how do they work?
Once you've entered a shipment tracking number into the UPS Widget application through 'Track a new shipment', the UPS Widget will track and get a status update. UPS Widget will also notify you automatically when your shipment is delivered, as well as if there's an exception or an incomplete delivery (which means not all shipments have arrived at the same time.) The application also lets you link over to ups.com for further detail. :
- Information Received
- In Transit
- Delivered
- Incomplete
- Exception
Within the "Detailed Shipment View," you can tell at a glance from our colour coding which packages are speeding right along and which may need your attention.
Whenever you create a shipment, you can assign it a shipment name that is more memorable than the tracking number, such as 'Bill's Final Contract.'
I'm having problems adding RSS feeds
Feeds are sometimes temporarily unavailable so you might want to wait a bit and try again. Do check that you've typed in the correct URL and that it's a valid RSS feed. If the problem persists it may be an issue with proxy settings – in which case, contact your IT department or the HelpDesk.
What is the right-click menu? How do I access it, and what is it for?
The right-click menu is a quick way to access some of UPS Widget's functionality, including:
- Show/Hide UPS Widget - Bring the character onto the screen, or send it away again
- Track – Enter shipment information to track packages
- News Feeds – Access preset newsfeeds or set up your own
- Show/Hide News Ticker – Choose whether or not to display the ticker
- Exit - Shut down UPS Widget. You won't receive any messages until it is restarted.
To access the right-click menu, right-click either the icon located in the system tray, or UPS Widget itself. This is a right mouse click on Windows® and Mac® with a two-button mouse or a 'crtl-click' on a Mac® with a one-button mouse.
When I right-click, the menu doesn't appear alongside the UPS Widget application. How do I fix it?
This issue may be a result of the version of ADOBE® AIR™ in use. UPS Widget works optimally in ADOBE® AIR™ v 1.5.2.8870 or higher.
How do I get different styles for my UPS Widget?
We will make these available over the coming weeks through promotions and activities – keep your UPS Widget active so you don't miss out.
I've installed UPS Widget correctly. Why haven't I received any messages?
There are a few possible reasons for this:
- You could be accessing the Internet through a Proxy Server. By default the UPS Widget application will use the same settings as Internet Explorer®, so if you can access the Internet through the web browser, UPS Widget can too. But you may need to give UPS Widget your details manually. (Please check with your Network Administrator or ISP to find out if this is the case.) To do this, follow these steps:
- Access the UPS Widget Settings from the right-click menu
- Click on "Use Proxy Server" or "Proxy Settings" to open the proxy window
- Click the circle next to "Manually enter settings" and enter the details provided by your Network Administrator or ISP
- Click "OK" to close the Proxy Settings window, and then close the Settings window.
- UPS Widget should now connect to the net through the Proxy Server - just like your web browser - and you should be able to receive messages
- Most messages are shown at a pre-set time/date. If your computer clock is wrong, messages won't come through at the right time. Check your time settings by double-clicking the time in the system tray
- You may not have any channels checked
- PowerPoint® is running. UPS Widget doesn't display anything while PowerPoint® is running to avoid disrupting presentations. As soon as you close PowerPoint®, your pending messages will appear
Why doesn't UPS Widget make any sound?
UPS Widget definitely makes some noises! Make sure:
- You have a sound card in your computer
- You have speakers plugged into the computer and they are turned on
- You do not have the sound muted in Windows®
- The sound icon at the bottom of the application is checked
To silence UPS Widget, click the "sound" icon at the bottom right of the application. Clicking it again will restore sound.
I closed a message by mistake. How do I recall it?
Simply access the news menu and choose the appropriate message from either "News Headlines" or "UPS News".
Is UPS Widget storing all of the messages on my computer? Will I run out of space?
No. Once a message has been deleted from the message history, all the relevant assets are also deleted.
When I click on a link sent to me by UPS Widget, nothing happens. Why?
Some users, AOL® users in particular, may have an unsupported browser associated with links or not have one set up at all. Follow these steps to fix this issue:
- From the Windows® Start Menu, choose "Control Panel" (or "Settings > Control Panel if using the "Classic Start Menu" or a Windows® version earlier than Windows® XP)
- Select "Network and Internet Connections > Internet Options" (or "Internet Properties" if using a Windows® version earlier than Windows® XP)
- On that window, select the "Programs" tab
- Make sure you tick the box next to "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser"
- Start Internet Explorer® and choose "Yes"
- If using another browser such as Mozilla®, Netscape®, Firefox® or Opera® please refer to the relevant help section in those applications to set them as the default browser
On a Mac®, go to Safari® or Mozilla® application preferences and look for the 'Default Web Browser' setting, Make sure that the browser you wish to use as a default is selected in the drop-down menu.
You may have large fonts setup in your display settings. To revert to small fonts, you need to do the following:
- From the Windows® Start Menu, choose "Control Panel" (or "Settings > Control Panel if using the "Classic Start Menu" or a Windows® version earlier than Windows® XP)
- Select "Appearance and Themes > Display" (or "Display" if using a Windows® version earlier than Windows® XP)
- Select the Settings tab
- Click the "Advanced" button
- Change Display Font Size to Small Fonts
- Click Apply/OK and Reboot
Note: This will also change the font size of all of your desktop icons, etc. There is no Mac® equivalent.
UPS Widget can display videos in a number of formats using Windows® Media Player. Still, you may need to install extra software (known as codec's) on your computer to support these formats. To download the most up-to-date codecs from Microsoft®, click here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx
Why doesn't the 'send to a friend' function work?
The 'Send to a Friend' function, sadly, isn't supported by certain e-mail clients, such as AOL® and Lotus Notes®.
